India’s belligerent rhetoric

THERE has been yet another provocative and irresponsible statement from the Indian side, this time by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who claimed that any future talks with Pakistan would only be held on what he described as “Pakistan-administered Kashmir.” Such remarks are not only inflammatory but also reflect India’s continued attempt to distort the internationally recognized reality of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Equally disturbing was his rhetoric of aggression and belligerence.

Our Foreign Office rightly responded in the strongest possible terms, rejecting these remarks while correctly pointing out that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognized dispute that is still on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council. Multiple UNSC resolutions affirm the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination through a free and impartial process. It is deeply regrettable that India continues to ignore these resolutions, despite the fact that it was India’s own leadership that originally took the Kashmir issue to the United Nations. Distorting facts has become a hallmark of the Indian leadership, but such tactics cannot hoodwink the international community. No amount of misleading rhetoric can erase the legal and historical reality of Kashmir dispute. Nor can such statements divert global attention from India’s domestic instability and the widely documented human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The latest remarks also reveal an unmistakable reliance on the language of threats rather than diplomacy. Such belligerent posturing serves no constructive purpose and only undermines regional peace and stability. The international community should take serious note of this dangerous rhetoric. Pakistan has repeatedly expressed commitment to peace but will never compromise on its sovereignty or territorial integrity. Any act of aggression will be met with a resolute response as was demonstrated in May last year. The courage, professionalism and preparedness demonstrated by our defence forces, backed by the unwavering resolve of the entire nation, leave no room for doubt that any future misadventure will also be decisively responded to.
