Besides, Badin has been included in the list of 30 districts whose sewage water carries the virus of the crippling disease. Samples analysed at the anti-polio laboratory established in the National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed the presence of the environmental poliovirus WPV1.

The samples were taken from February 21 to 27 and tested positive for the wild polio virus. This brings the total count of outbreak districts to 30 and positive environmental samples to 83 this year 2024. The virus isolated from the samples is as per sources remained in circulation in Afghanistan and was reintroduced through cross-border transmission three months earlier.

On this, an important meeting was convened chaired by Abdul Fattah Hulio, Deputy Commissioner Badin, on the other day which was participated by the representatives of WHO and Health Department district Badin. While chairing the meeting, DC Badin expressed satisfaction over taken efforts of the different stakeholders for eliminating the poliovirus from district Badin saying that the presence of poliovirus in environmental sample is a cause of concern for us because it means children, especially those under five years of age, are at on risk from this paralysis-causing disease.

He urged the parents that embracing vaccination is not just a choice, but a responsibility we owe to our children to protect them from the disability-causing poliovirus.

I request parents to understand the urgency of the situation and make sure that when vaccinators arrive at your door, you bring every child under five out to receive this life-saving vaccine, Abdul Fattah Hulio added.
