ROME – The Embassy of Pakistan in Italy has announced that it will discontinue the issuance of Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) from 15 October 2026, replacing them with electronic passports (e-passports).
A public notice shared by the embassy on Facebook said all passport applications processed from the effective date will be for e-passports, and MRPs will no longer be issued.
The embassy has clarified that existing valid passports will remain valid until their respective expiry dates. Holders will not be required to replace their passports immediately solely because of the change in policy.
Applicants seeking e-passports have been advised to submit the required application forms and supporting documents in accordance with the embassy’s applicable procedures.
The notice also states that applicants must complete the required biometric verification and fulfil all relevant e-passport requirements.

The embassy has urged Pakistani citizens to follow its official instructions when applying for passports and to ensure they meet the necessary requirements before submitting their applications.
The new arrangement will take effect at the Embassy of Pakistan in Rome on October 15, 2026.
