E-taxi initiative

At a time when cities are choking under pollution and commuters are burdened by rising fuel costs, the e-taxi initiative by Punjab government signals a decisive shift toward clean, affordable and future-ready mobility. By introducing electric vehicles into public transport ecosystem, the provincial government has demonstrated that climate action and public welfare can move forward together.

The scale of public response to the scheme underlines its relevance. Thousands of applicants seeking participation show how desperately people want alternatives that offer stable livelihoods without crushing burden of fuel expenses. With interest-free financing and a substantial government subsidy, the initiative lowers long-standing barriers to entry in the transport sector. Its inclusive design particularly reservation of slots for women adds a strong social dimension, turning the project into a tool for empowerment rather than merely a transport upgrade.

Beyond individual livelihoods, environmental benefits are significant. Transport emissions are a major contributor to urban smog, and gradual replacement of combustion-engine vehicles with electric alternatives can meaningfully improve air quality. Punjab’s efforts do not stop at e-taxis. Electric buses have already been launched in several cities, providing cleaner and more efficient mass transit, while growing popularity of e-bikes reflects a shift in public behaviour toward sustainable mobility.

Collectively, these steps signal a broader transition to modern, low-emission transport. We believe a comprehensive policy at the national level is essential to ensure electric vehicles are within the reach of middle class. This should include incentives, affordable financing and local manufacturing support.
