China has a grand vision for the future and the good news is that it’s a vision not just confined to China’s future but also embracing the future of the whole world.
Three of the four sections making up a white paper released by the State Council Information Office just days ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, point to a new era of international relations with all countries joining forces to build a global community with the common purpose of bringing about a peaceful, prosperous and beautiful world.
This vision is all about longing for a perfect world. China and its people have shown to the world in concrete terms that unity of effort and cooperation can overcome any obstacle and make dreams come true.
From one of the world’s poorest nations, China has been able in just 40 years to become the second-biggest economy on earth. It’s an unprecedented achievement in human history which has been attained, as exemplified in the white paper, upholding and advancing economic globalization, developing global partnerships, supporting multilateralism and upholding international equity and justice, as well as taking a lead in reforming and developing the global governance system.
The universal goals set out in the white paper expand President Xi Jinping’s concept of a community with a shared future and are the only way forward considering the dangers that hang over humanity.
The world we live in is riddled with divisions, conflicts, terrorism and mutual distrust. And, if this were not enough, life on earth is threatened by a rising temperature caused by the fossil fuels we burn for energy and the loss of forests due to logging, agriculture, natural disasters, urbanization and mining.
It’s a situation requiring joint effort by all nations and China is leading the world in stressing that every country, regardless of its size, can make a contribution in tackling the problems that are hindering the future of humankind. As already emphasized by the Report to the 19th CPC National Congress “the world is undergoing major developments, transformation, and adjustment, but peace and development remain the call of our day…And yet, as a world we face growing uncertainties and destabilizing factors…The future of humankind hinges on the choices people of all countries make. We, the Chinese, are ready to work with the people of all other countries to build a community with shared future and create a bright tomorrow for all of us.”
This year is the 70th birthday of the PRC. The Chinese people ought to be congratulated for what they have been able to achieve since the foundation of their Republic. Perhaps, rather than a miracle, their achievement could be better described as a triumph. A triumph attained through a collective endeavour and a political leadership that has been able to inspire and guide the Chinese people towards a common goal of progress and prosperity.
China is now trying to inspire the world to enter a new era of goodwill and brotherhood. The way the world will respond will determine the future of our planet.
