BEIJING – China appreciated Prime Minister Imran Khan for attending the opening ceremony of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics that was held on February 4.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian in a press conference said that the warm welcome to the Pakistani contingent by the Chinese audience once again showed the ironclad friendship was deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of the two countries.

He remarked that the participation in the sports by Pakistani athletes and the vigorous support of different social sectors in Pakistan to the Beijing Games were in line with the fine tradition between the two countries for rendering mutual support.

The premier on Friday attended the magnificent opening ceremony of the event along with his cabinet members including Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, at the Beijing National Stadium, with 15,000 spectators in presence.

It lasted 100 minutes, ending with fireworks. The ceremony featured an estimated 3,000 performers.

Around 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries and regions are participating in over 100 events.

The Pakistani premier attended the event in show of solidarity as several western countries have announced diplomatic boycott of the event.
