Casualties Feared As Several Buildings Collapse In Venezuela Twin Earthquakes

CARACAS – A state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within less than a minute on Wednesday evening, raising fears of widespread destruction and heavy loss of life.

According to information cited from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.2 in magnitude and struck in Carabobo state, with its epicenter located about 20 kilometers from the capital, Caracas. Just 39 seconds later, a second and even stronger earthquake measuring 7.5 was recorded.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the full extent of the damage. However, preliminary assessments suggest that the impact could be severe.

USGS estimates indicate a high probability of significant loss of life and extensive destruction, with a substantial chance that fatalities could exceed 10,000.

Strong shaking was felt across Caracas, where reports indicate that buildings have collapsed, fuel supplies have been disrupted, and people trapped beneath rubble are calling for help.

Venezuela’s Interior Minister urged residents to leave their homes and move to safer areas. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the nation on state television, announcing a nationwide state of emergency and calling on citizens to remain united during the crisis.

“Our first message to the nation is to stay united to save lives,” Rodríguez said during the televised address.

The government has ordered all educational institutions to remain closed for the rest of the week, while most public activities have been suspended except for essential services. The acting president also appealed to doctors and nurses to report immediately to medical facilities to assist with emergency response efforts.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s main international airport, Maiquetía International Airport, has been closed after suffering what officials described as severe earthquake damage. Rodríguez confirmed that the airport terminal sustained significant structural damage, forcing authorities to suspend operations.

Videos circulating following the earthquakes reportedly show people running through airport corridors as debris falls from sections of the ceiling.

Emergency services and rescue teams continue to assess the situation as authorities work to determine the full scale of the disaster.
