TORONTO – The trade war between the United States and Canada has intensified, with Canada announcing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on hundreds of US products.
The new tariffs, which will take effect on September 8, will cover a range of goods, including steel, dairy products, electronics, agricultural equipment, and pulp and paper.
The latest tariff measures mark a further deterioration in trade relations between the two major North American economies, raising concerns over the potential impact on businesses, consumers and cross-border trade.
A senior Canadian government official said the affected products would also include certain steel and aluminum items, furniture and clothing.
The latest measures are expected to further escalate trade tensions between the two neighboring countries, following the failure of negotiations and the imposition of new US tariffs on Canadian goods.
Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Canada’s finance minister described the situation as an unprecedented challenge for the country but said Canada was prepared to respond and protect its economic interests.
The United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian products worth approximately $27.6 billion starting August 22, prompting Ottawa to announce countermeasures.
Canada has also unveiled a $7.5 billion support package aimed at helping businesses and workers affected by the US tariffs.
