Bilawal Picks Amjad Hussain for Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Post

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday named Advocate Amjad Hussain as the party’s nominee for the position of Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister.

The announcement followed the PPP’s decision a day earlier to form the next government after emerging as the largest party in the recent elections, with backing from the PML-N.

Under a power-sharing arrangement agreed upon by local leaders of both parties, the chief minister’s office will go to the PPP, while the governor’s position and the slot of opposition leader will be allocated to the PML-N.

In an official statement shared on X, the PPP said Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had chosen the party’s Gilgit-Baltistan president, Advocate Amjad Hussain, to lead the regional government.

The statement added that Bilawal also spoke with Hussain by phone and issued directions regarding the formation of the new government, along with ensuring constitutional and economic rights for the people of the region.

Advocate Amjad Hussain has served as PPP Gilgit-Baltistan president since 2016 and recently secured victory from constituency GBA-I in the latest elections. A senior lawyer by profession, he is widely known for his understanding of constitutional and legal matters concerning Gilgit-Baltistan.
