SYDNEY – The cricket fans could witness a historic moment in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 15th season as Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam and Australia’s premier batter Steve Smith are likely to open the innings together for the Sydney Sixers.
Australian media reported that the Sixers have signed Babar Azam as a direct overseas player for the full season, increasing the likelihood of a formidable opening partnership with Steve Smith.
Former Australian skipper Aaron Finch praised the potential pairing, calling it “extraordinary.” Speaking on the Big Bash Podcast, Finch said, “Steve Smith always looks a class above in the BBL, and when you add someone like Babar Azam, who plays with such elegance and precision, it creates a brilliant combination. It would be a memorable moment for cricket lovers.”
Finch also highlighted that although both players have competed against each other in international cricket, this would mark their first outing as teammates — a prospect that adds even more excitement to the upcoming BBL season.
Steve Smith had an impressive showing in the previous BBL season, scoring 173 runs in just three matches including an unbeaten 121 off 64 balls against Perth Scorchers.
While Smith has not played a T20 international since February 2023, Finch revealed that the veteran batter has his sights set on representing Australia in the Olympic Games 2028 where cricket is expected to be featured.
BBL 2025 season is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated yet, with Babar Azam joining the Sixers and the possibility of a Smith-Babar partnership.
