A historic Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster, initially owned by Afghanistan’s former king Zahir Shah, has clinched the prestigious ‘Best of Show’ award at the US Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show.
Ordered by King Mohammed Zahir Shah of Afghanistan in May 1937, this 540 K Special Roadster was delivered in September and remained in his ownership until he bestowed it to his UK-based son-in-law in 1950.
Changing hands, it was later acquired by a US collector in 1950.
Recently, Jim Patterson, another US collector, secured the car at a Pebble Beach auction for $9.9 million, as reported by Carscoops.
“The 540 K Special Roadster winning the ‘Best of Showʼ title at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance crowns the immense commitment of RM Auto Restoration and Mercedes-Benz Heritage to the restoration of this outstanding vehicle,” Mercedes-Benz Heritage boss Marcus Breitschwerdt said after the win. “We are proud to have contributed to this success story with the unique expertise of our Classic Center and the archives.
