Emergency In 12 Kp Districts Under Consideration As Civil Military Leaders Meet Tomorrow

ISLAMABAD – The possibility of emergency rule in KP emerged as major political development, with high-level meeting expected tomorrow to discuss extraordinary constitutional measures, including the possible imposition of Governor’s Rule in the province.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military officials are expected to attend the crucial meeting, where reports from national security institutions will also be reviewed.

A final decision on situation in terror-hit region could be taken during the meeting, potentially setting the stage for significant political and administrative developments in the province.

One of key proposals under consideration involves imposing emergency in 12 districts, including the merged districts of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Another proposal would allow the federal government to exercise key powers in the province. The meeting is expected to examine the constitutional framework under Articles 232 to 234 of the Constitution of Pakistan before any major decision is approved.

The possibility of imposing emergency rule or Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa intensified amid tensions between federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.

As KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi backed considering emergency measures citing security concerns. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has rejected the possibility, describing the governor’s position as unconstitutional and challenging the federal government’s counterterrorism approach.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also warned that Governor’s Rule could deepen political tensions rather than resolve the province’s problems. The party has indicated that it would pursue political and legal options against any move it considers unconstitutional.

The dispute follows disagreements over security operations, access to jailed PTI founder Imran Khan and his medical treatment. PTI has also continued its long march in KP, demanding Khan’s release.

Articles 232 to 234 of the Constitution are reportedly among the provisions being examined. However, emergency rule or Governor’s Rule has not been officially confirmed, and the reported proposals and meeting require further verification.
