RAWALPINDI – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, with regional security, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and terrorism linked to Afghanistan featuring prominently in discussions.
ISPR shared details of the meeting as two sides reviewed prevailing security environment and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, including the United Nations’ role in maintaining international peace and security. The discussions also covered regional stability, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and concerns over terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and security, while highlighting the country’s contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions.
The army chief also acknowledged the UN’s role in promoting peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation under the leadership of Secretary-General Guterres.
Guterres, meanwhile, paid tribute to Pakistan and its armed forces for their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and their contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
The UN chief also recognized Pakistan’s continued engagement in efforts aimed at promoting international peace and security and appreciated Islamabad’s efforts to pursue peaceful solutions to conflicts in the region.
The meeting came as Pakistan continues to raise concerns at international forums over security challenges emanating from Afghanistan, the Kashmir dispute and the status of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan has also stressed diplomacy and peaceful resolution of regional disputes in its recent engagements with the UN leadership.
