Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to finalise a comprehensive gas load management plan for winter and take advance steps to ensure uninterrupted gas imports amid the evolving regional situation.
Chairing a meeting in Islamabad, the PM ordered a public awareness campaign on gas conservation and directed officials to prioritise locally produced gas for domestic consumers, while RLNG would be allocated mainly to power plants and industries.
Officials said measures were also being taken to ensure uninterrupted gas transmission from reserves in northern areas. A proposal to facilitate bank financing for electric appliances used for water and space heating was also discussed.
The government is currently working on an LNG import plan for December-February. Gas companies and the Petroleum Division have sought at least 22 cargoes, while the energy task force is considering 10-12 cargoes on a best-effort basis amid disruptions to regional energy routes.
Sources said actual imports could be limited to seven or eight cargoes due to prevailing market conditions. The LNG procurement plan is also significant for Pakistan’s current account targets agreed with the IMF.
