Mohammad Abbas Exclusion From Second West Indies Test Sparks Debate

Pakistan’s decision to leave experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas out of the playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies has sparked debate, particularly after his match-winning performance in the opening game.

Pakistan made four changes to the team following their defeat in the first Test, but Abbas’ omission attracted the most attention.

The right-arm fast bowler claimed eight wickets in the first Test, including a five-wicket haul in one innings, and was Pakistan’s standout bowler in the match.

Captain Babar Azam clarified that Abbas was fully fit and had been rested because of the pitch and playing conditions rather than any fitness issue.

Pakistan brought in Sajid Khan to strengthen the spin attack and handed a Test debut to young fast bowler Ubaid Shah as Abbas’ replacement.

Since returning to Pakistan’s Test squad in December 2024, Abbas has taken 28 wickets in five matches, establishing himself as one of the team’s most reliable pace bowlers. His economy and overall consistency have also compared favourably with the other fast bowlers in the squad.

Abbas has also performed effectively on slower pitches, including in the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh, where conditions generally offer less assistance to fast bowlers.

His experience could become particularly valuable on Pakistan’s upcoming England tour, where his knowledge of English conditions and county cricket may strengthen the pace attack.

Pakistan are looking to level the two-Test series against the West Indies after suffering defeat in the opening match.
