DAMASCUS – The armed rebels defeated government security forces and took control of Aleppo, the international media reports said on Tuesday.

Despite airstrikes by Russian and Syrian forces, the advance of armed militants in Aleppo continued. They reported that the armed rebels also seized control of President Bashar al-Assad’s residence and raised their flag while the images of this victory were widely circulated on social media.

Six civilians were killed in the shelling by the rebels. The situation in Aleppo is rapidly becoming tense by every passing moment.

Global powers including the United States and Muslim countries urged for an immediate end to the escalation while an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was also called.

The neighboring Muslim countries also became active in efforts for a ceasefire.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and discussed the ongoing situation. Both the leaders advised the warring parties to engage in the peace talks and called for a ceasefire in Aleppo.

The long war in Syria began in 2011 and much of the country was seized by the rebels.

Syria, with the help of allied forces, claimed to have crushed the rebellion in 2020, stating that the control of the country had been reclaimed from ISIS and rebel groups.

However, in the final front in Aleppo, the rebel fighters continued skirmishes with the forces in isolated areas and, after a few years of pauses, now successfully reorganized and regained control of Aleppo.
