ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s hockey team won big against China, making it to the semi-finals of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2024, where Green Shirts will lock horns with arch-rival India.
Sensational players Nadeem Ahmed and Hannan Shahid net two goals, while Abdul Rehman added another to cement the team’s superiority.
Asian side now faces a crucial semi-final against traditional rivals India this weekend. Indian team has been undefeated throughout the tournament, adding extra excitement to this upcoming showdown.
Pakistan earned their first win by overcoming Japan 2-1, and Nadeem Ahmed’s goal in the first quarter put Asian side ahead, but Japan equalised in the second quarter. Sufyan Khan’s goal in the 10th minute of the second quarter restored Pakistan’s lead, securing the victory.
For the unversed, Pakistan’s initial games ended in draws with Malaysia and South Korea, respectively.
Pakistan national field hockey team has been a major force in international hockey since its debut in 1948. The team has won the Hockey World Cup four times and holds the record for the most gold medals in the Asian Games, with eight titles.
Green Shirts are also only Asian team to have won the Champions Trophy three times. Pakistan’s team has secured 29 international titles, including three Olympic gold medals. Known for its intense rivalry with India and competitive matchups with teams like the Netherlands and Australia, the team plays at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore, with Shahnaz Sheikh as the head coach and Saeed Khan as the team manager.
