LAHORE – Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has elected Hafiz Narem-ur-Rehman as its new emir (leader) for the next five years.

More than 45,000 voters including 6,000 women exercised their right to vote to elect new emir from three candidates Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, outgoing emir Siraj-ul-Haq and former General Secretary Liaqat Baloch. Voting turnout remained 82 per cent.

After obtaining a degree in civil engineering, Hafiz Naeem did masters in Islamic history from Karachi University. He had served as Nazim-e-Aama of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba. He joined JI in 2000, and was named emir of party’s Karachi chapter in October 2013. He is also the president of Al-Khidmat Foundation Karachi branch.

He lost election for Karachi Mayor to PPP’s Barrister Murtaza Wahab with a narrow margin.

In the General Elections 2024, he had won election from PS-129 North Nazimabad. However, he announced to vacate the seat without taking oath while claiming that that the PTI backed independent candidate had actually won from this constituency.

Outgoing emir Sirajul Haq announced to resign while accepting responsibility of JI defeat in February 8 general elections.
