Aleksei A. Navalny, a known activist and staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, passed away on Friday in a federal confinement where he was shifted in 2023.
Kremlin’s Federal Penitentiary Service announced Navalny’s untimely death as the man reportedly lost consciousness after strolling inside prison where he was moved late last year. The deceased made last appearance in a video link, for court hearing.
A lawyer, and famous anti-graft activist remained vocal against Putin, campaigning against ruling party. During his struggle, he managed massive anti-government protests.
Navalny came back to Moscow in three years back from Europe, where he had been treated after being poisoned. He was quickly held for agitation, and remained behind bars since then. He spent all these years under harsh conditions while facing 19-year prison sentence.
The man raked popularity through his viral clip, revealing embezzelment of funds among Russia’s ruling class, sparking protests.
Despite his prison, the dissent leader continued to challenge Moscow incumbent authorities. He also hurled accusations at Prime Minister Medvedev. His activism led to arrests of severla other activists.
Born in 1976, Navalny’s interest in politics started early, and he became known for his rhetoric against Putin’s government.
