Law makers in Lower House of parliament on Monday passed a resolution for the committee’s formation to file a reference against the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial.

The motion was presented in the NA session after suspending the routine business of the house. The fiery session of the lower house of the Parliament were of the view that the Parliament should ‘assert’ its powers.

A special five-member parliamentary committee has been formed to prepare the reference against the CJP and other judges. The parliamentary committee will comprise members of various political parties. Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, Khurshid Junejo, Salahuddin Ayubi, Shahnaz Baloch are among the members. However, the speaker will be able to replace the members. The motion to form the committee was moved by Shazia Sobiya Soomro. It sought action against the CJP over misconduct. The authority to form the committee was given to the speaker of the National Assembly.

A motion to constitute the parliamentary committee was tabled in the National Assembly and subsequently approved. Members of various parties are reportedly drafting the committee’s terms of reference. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif suggested parliament send a reference to the Supreme Judicial Council against the CJP and play its historical role.

During the session the disgruntled leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Wajiha Qamar, presented a resolution against the miscreants of PTI who attacked government buildings after the arrest of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Raja Riaz, the opposition leader of the National Assembly, while expressing his views, fired a fresh salvo at Mr Khan, saying, “What Imran Khan has done in the last week, even the enemies of the country have not done it.
