Blood donation: Indonesian embassy leads in humanitarian cause

Zubair Qureshi

Responding to the call of the Indonesian Ambassador Adam M Tugio, ambassadors, charge d’affaires and diplomats from some Association of the South East Asian Nations countries, Greece and Jordan Saturday attended the blood donation camp set up at the Indonesian embassy and volunteered blood donation for the Pakistan Red Crescent Society on Friday.

Though the number of donors was not corresponding to the invitation circulated around yet Ambassador Tugio termed it was quite reassuring to see fellow ambassadors colleagues come on an off day for a good cause.

Besides the diplomatic community, the Indonesian students from the International Islamic University , the NUML and others also came to participate in the noble cause. The staff members of the embassy, their spouses and the Indonesian nationals were also among the donors.

Diplomats from Embassy of Hungary and High Commission of Canada also donated blood.

PRCS Regional Blood Donor Center is known for being very responsible in supplying safe quality blood to the community by implementing a safe blood program that embodies the spirit of “Altruism” and the principle of Voluntary, non-remunerated Blood Donation.Ambassador Adam Tugio said, “Saving one life is equivalent to saving humanity and blood donation raises awareness of the importance of regular blood donations to help patients in need.”

The outgoing Acting Ambassador of Malaysia Deddy Faisal, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam Abdul Mubdi Osman, Ambassador of Greece Konstantinos Moastsos and Ambassador of Jordan Ibrahim Almadani who volunteered blood donation termed the Indonesian embassy’s initiative a noble gesture which others should also follow.

Ambassador Almadani said, “I am very happy to be part of such an important drive, as it can help save or improve the lives of our Pakistani brothers or sisters.”

Our bodies he said reproduce blood and make up for the quantity donated quickly. Thus blood donation is good for human body as we are less likely to suffer a heart attack, he said.

Ambassador Tugio expressed his appreciation to the entire team of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and to all the blood donors, including youth for voluntarily donating blood and inspiring others to join hands and support a noble cause.

“The collected blood will be distributed to critical patients with Thalassemia, Hemophilia, Cancer, Dialysis, and others who are in serious illness in hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi”, added a team member of PRCS.
