The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has written a letter to Ministry of Defense (MoD) for deployment of Pak Army during second phase of local government (LG) polls and re-polling in some districts. The letter said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police failed in maintaining law and order during conduct of LG polls held in December 2021.

In a press release issued here on Wednesday, the Election Commission said that the KP police could not maintain peace on polling day, adding that during the LG polls several videos showed tearing of ballot papers, breaking of the ballot boxes and harassment of polling staff in Peshawar and other parts of the province and apathy of police in controlling the situation.

Therefore, it has been decided that Pak Army would be deployed during the second phase of polling and during re-polling in some districts of the province to ensure not only peaceful elections but also voters to exercise their voting right without fear or favour. The Election Commission has further decided to take strict action against the officials involved in illegal activities on the polling day.—APP
