The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the federal and provincial governments to amend the Haq Mehar column in the Nikahnama (Marriage Agreement), these directions were issued on Saturday.
The court also directed authorities concerned to add separate columns for cash, moveable and immoveable properties in the Nikahnama register.
Under Islamic law, Haq Mehar is said to be an obligatory payment that is made in the form of money, jewelery, home goods, furniture or any other form of property by the husband to his wife-to-be upon taking her hand in marriage.
