Mobile phone and internet services at 167 locations in Lahore remained suspended on third consecutive day on Saturday due to fears of the banned Tehreek-e-Libek spreading chaos through social media.
According to sources, internet and mobile phone service has been suspended in the 10 km radius of the Yateem Khana Chowk around the main sit-in of the banned TPL.
Internet service is down in most areas, while mobile services are affected in Mozang, Lytton Road, Samanabad, Iqbal Town, Sanda, Chauburji, Sabzazar, Jail Road, Mall Road, Rewaz Garden, Data Darbar and adjoining areas.
Having trouble doing other online things according to sources, mobile phone companies have suspended internet in 167 towers, with the aim of shutting down services to prevent chaos on social media.
It is to be noted that the social media sites Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram across the country, including Lahore, were shut down for 5 hours the other day to prevent possible protests by the banned religious party, Sheikh Rashid said.
He apologized to the people for the temporary suspension and promised to restore it in future.
It is believed that the government banned Tehreek-e-Lubaik Pakistan under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. Tehreek-e-Lubaik Pakistan was added to the list of banned organizations. The Counter Terrorism Department also took action against the banned organization.
CTD started investigating the social media accounts of the banned organization. Lists of the social media accounts of the banned organization were prepared.
According to sources, identity cards and passports of key officials of Tehreek-e-Libek are also being blocked. The process of freezing assets is being carried out under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
On the other hand, the Home Department has ordered a ban on all leaders and clerics of Tehreek-e-Libek due to the ban.
According to the new order, no leader of the banned Tehreek-e-Libek can speak anywhere, their Facebook accounts have been shut down. WhatsApp groups have been closed.
