100 days of tragedy in Gaza

THE destructive Israeli military operation in Gaza has reached a sombre juncture, with Sunday commemorating the 100th day of widespread atrocities and persecution. Over this period, the toll on Palestinian lives has been staggering, with more than 23,000 casualties — predominantly women and children — as Israel pursued a relentless brutal campaign that ravaged civilian infrastructure.

In Gaza, homes, hospitals, schools, bakeries and places of worship lay in ruins, displacing millions of Palestinians from their homes. The UN’s own facilities have not been spared, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The situation within Gaza is dire, with hundreds of Palestinians reportedly arbitrarily detained in undisclosed locations, a troubling phenomenon akin to enforced disappearance and some released detainees alleging ill-treatment and torture at the hands of Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Simultaneously, in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the UN Human Rights Office has documented deaths of 330 Palestinians, including 84 children. Regrettably, the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, has failed to issue a call for an immediate ceasefire, allowing violence to persist. However, commendation is due to South Africa for filing an application against Israeli atrocities in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, underscoring urgent need for accountability.

Despite this, double standards persist as Western countries withhold support for South Africa’s just pursuit. As flames of this conflict threaten to engulf the entire region, global leaders cannot afford to remain passive observers. Immediate and concerted efforts are required to mediate and bring about a sustainable resolution, ensuring rights and security of the Palestinians. The world must act decisively to prevent further sufferings of Palestinian people and lay the foundation for a future where peace and coexistence prevail in this troubled region. The primary responsibility for mediating a just solution to the conflict rests with the United States. Rather than siding with the oppressor, the US should assume the role of an impartial mediator. The establishment of an independent, viable and contiguous Palestinian state, with Al-Quds al Sharif as its capital, is pivotal for achieving lasting peace in the region. The OIC also bears a significant responsibility in supporting the Palestinian cause. It must actively contribute to diplomatic efforts and advocate for rights of Palestinians to ensure the realisation of their aspirations.
