WFP lauds Punjab dev pace

Lahore—UN World Food Programme (WFP) Regional Director for Asia & Pacific Region David Kaatrud Friday appreciated the pace of development in Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
He termed the Punjab Khidmat Card Programme, Punjab Food Security Programme, Punjab Food Authorities great initiatives for providing people with adulteration-free quality food. He also lauded the efforts of the “Punjab Saaf Pani Company” as the flagship activity of the provincial government.
Earlier, a six-member delegation of the UN World Food Programme briefed Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Shamail Ahmad Khawaja and others at the Civil Secretariat here on Friday. Deputy Country Head World Food Progamme Stephen Gunning, Programme Head William Affif, Head of Provincial Office UNWFP Shahzada Rasheed and representatives of UNWFP Raja Muhammad Amjad and Ms Salma Yaqub apprised the meeting about the pace of ongoing projects in Punjab, in collaboration with World Food Programme.
Shamail Khawaja informed the delegation about provision of nutrition to the young generation, which would become harbinger of prosperity and rapid growth of the national GDP also. He said that CM Shehbaz Sharif had launched a massive skill development programme, and one million job-less youngsters were being provided jobs through the programme every year.
Two state-of-the-art drug and food testing laboratories have been established in Lahore at a cost of Rs 530 million. These laboratories will provide facility of 700 testing scope including all micro-biology tests. The government has established the Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority, which will act independently to make sure that the tests are performed in a transparent manner.
Punjab Food Secretary Dr Pervaiz Ahmad Khan informed the delegation that 2.2 million tonnes of wheat, procured during the current season, was kept in the open as cyloses to store the wheat were insufficient.
The regional director assured the meeting that the UN WFP would give strategic, tactical and financial help for construction of more cyloses in Punjab to help prevent any food safety problem. He also promised cooperation in launching the “School Feeding Programme”, being initiated in the government sector schools.—APP
