Welcome assurance by COAS

CHIEF of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa reiterated on Thursday that role of the military and paramilitary forces in maintaining law and order would continue unabated to consolidate budding peace in Karachi. During his visit to the city, he said peace efforts would continue till attainment of a sustainable peace.
Before the on-going operation, there was general impression that Karachi was slipping out of hand but no one was ready to catch the bull by horns. The credit went to former Army Chief, Gen Raheel Sharif, who initiated concrete measures to check the malaise afflicting this business hub of the country. This he did despite numerous odds and challenges including propaganda by vested interests that operation was discriminatory whereas it was directed against criminals and corrupts irrespective of their political affiliation, connection or influence. And that is why, the campaign bore fruit and a resemblance of normalcy was there to witness, which is being appreciated by people of Karachi themselves. However, the fact remains that this achievement would prove to be transitory if not taken to its logical conclusion. In this backdrop, Gen Bajwa’s initiative to take businessmen, traders and other stakeholders on board would help crystallise the way forward. There is also an impression that Army and Rangers were doing their job well but provincial government was not cooperating as it should. As peace in Karachi is vital for progress and prosperity of the country and its dividends would mainly go to people of Karachi and Sindh Government, we hope a coordinated approach would be adopted to make the city crime and terror free.
