Team India’s new all rounder Vijay Shankar who has replaced Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (getting married on 23rd November) for the remaining two Tests against Sri Lanka (Nagpur Nov. 24-28) and Delhi (Dec. 2-6) was “surprised” at his selection.
“I was in Indore when I got the news. It was indeed a pleasant surprise”, he said over telephone from Mumbai Airport, minutes before boarding a flight for Chennai.
“To be honest I was not expecting the call but yes, knew my time would come anytime soon”.
“If selected in the final XI, will try my best to cement my place in the team by giving hundred percent”, he added.
Vijay Shankar was born on India’s Republic Day some 26 years ago.
“Representing the same country is ultimate pride”.
The entire family, including mother (Rama Shankar) was happy with the selection.
Vijay Shankar has reached to this destination overcoming various hurdles.
“He suffered shoulder, ankle and knee injuries during last few years and had to undergo knee surgery by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala) last year”, his father, H. Shankar, who along with his other son (Ajay) kept boosting his morale”, the dad, speaking exclusively from Chennai, said.
Incidentally, Ajay Shankar is also totally committed to the game.
“My both sons have learnt to be calmed in any situation.
“Vijay is a very calm and cool boy. Never loses temper and clean from all bad habits. He is totally a pure vegetarian and has no girl-friends”, the father concluded.
Dhawan’s sister getting married
The selectors have only named one replacement for Bhuvi. Shikhar Dhawan will be out of Nagpur Test only. He will be available for the Delhi Test.
The BCCI has not disclosed Dhawan’s personal reason for Dhawan’s absence. However, it is learnt that his sister is getting married during the second Test period.
