Islamabad—Scholars on Monday at a seminar stressed that universities should play a greater role in the social reconstruction and reconfiguration of the society.
They were addressing a seminar titled “Role of the Universities in Social Reconstruction” organized by the Sophy’s Forum at the faculty of English studies held here at National University of Modern Languages (NUML).
The guest speakers included Khursheed Nadeem, renowned columnist and social analyst and Dr. Husunul Amin, Director Iqbal Institute of Research and Dialogue, International Islamic University addressed the occasion.
The speakers called upon the universities to play a proactive role in social reconstruction and reconfiguration. “The universities, instead of becoming the camp-followers of the society, should lead it from the front”, said Khursheed Nadeem.
“Academia can raise their voice and generate a discourse which as a `non-movement’ can contribute to the amelioration of the society, said Dr. Husunul Amin.
Dr Safeer Awan raised certain crucial questions and called upon the audience to use them as food for thought. The event was attended by a large number of faculty members and students.
During the question-answer session, interesting points were raised by the participants. “Education should be reconceptualized by extending the lexicon of critical ideas and locating itself in the larger domain of culture”, remarked Dr Jamil Asghar, Coordinator, Sophy’s Forum. It is pertinent to note that Sophy’s Forum has recently been established by the Faculty of English Studies under the aegis of the Dean, Dr. Muhammad Safeer Awan.
