Unhealthy diet leads to range of chronic diseases

MEDICAL experts on Sunday said that an unhealthy diet is one of the major risk factors for having a range of chronic diseases of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other conditions linked to obesity. According to them, improving dietary habits is a societal, not just an individual problem and it demands a population-based, multisectoral, multi-disciplinary, and culturally relevant approach to prevent from various non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Medical expert at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr Wasim Khawaja said that in order to prevent from NCDs, people should take a healthy diet including eating more fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains and cutting down on salt, sugar and fats. He advised to choose unsaturated fats, instead of saturated fats and towards the elimination of trans-fatty acids.
He claimed that one out of two Pakistanis are at risk of dying from preventable non-communicable diseases (NCDs) of diabetes, cardio-vascular ailments or cancer. He added as per World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2018 data, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now account for 58 percent of total deaths in Pakistan before the age of 70. Dr Sharif Astori from Federal Government Poly Clinic said that people can mention health tips and information on their nutritional diaries to see the impact on health due to adopting lifestyle choices and making further improvements.
He said that a nutrition education and information campaign is held annually on occasion of World Dietitians Day on March 13 focusing attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. He said that Dietitians help patients correct their cognitive errors by effectively using cognitive behavioural therapy. He added dietitian creates logical lifestyle changes that are helpful in preventing and treating NCDs and in maintaining good health.
