Transformers being installed to provide relief to prisoners: IG prisons

Lahore—IG Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir has said the Punjab government has provided Rs 11.84 million for installation of transformers in jails of the province.
Talking to media here on Sunday, he said new transformers had been installed in 13 jails of Punjab and work was underway to instal 24 more in other jails. He said it would provide great relief to prisoners in the current summer season, especially during the holy month of Ramazan.
The IG prisons said that various measures were being taken for well-being of prisoners, including provision of necessary items to them. He said that three powerlooms and a raising machine had been installed at Central Jail Sahiwal, on the recommendations of a committee, led by MNA Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.
He said the power rooms had started weaving blankets for the prisoners. It would help get rid of almost 100 years old itchy blankets in jails. He said in the upcoming winter season, prisoners would be provided army- standard, quality blankets. The IG claimed that about 8,000 blankets would be manufactured in a month on the new machines.
The IG prisons said various vehicles, currently being used by senior officials of the prisons department, were unable to cover long distances for being very old. He said that unavailability of vehicles in good condition was creating problems for inspection and monitoring of jails in different districts of the province. To solve this problem, seven new Vigo double-cabin vehicles had been purchased for senior officials of the department, he added.
