Timely expansion of NORI

CHAIRMAN Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Muhammad Naeem, on Monday, laid foundation stone of new oncology block at NORI (Nuclear Medicine Oncology & Radiotherapy Institute) in Islamabad. The new block will have state-of-the-art equipment including two high energy Linear accelerators, cyber knife, digital X-ray and mammography, CT simulator and diagnostic CT along with extension of indoor and outdoor facilities.
Thanks to hard work and dedication of PAEC doctors, technicians and administrators, NORI as well as other cancer diagnostic and treatment centres across the country have become symbols of quality medical facilities for a disease that is on the rise for a variety of reasons. It is because of trust of the people that patients often have to wait for weeks to get access to diagnostic services or treatment process and with this in view the addition of a new block with necessary equipment and machinery would surely be a leap forward in providing timely services to patients. Credit for this, of course, goes to the dynamic leadership of Chairman Muhammad Naeem and energetic Director of NORI Dr. Muhammad Faheem whose personal interest has made it possible to realise expansion plans for the benefit of people of this region.
The most important aspect of the services offered by NORI is that international quality diagnostic and treatment facilities are provided at rates much lower than the private sector. In view of constant increase in number of cancer patients and the need for expansion of screening facilities for early detection of the disease, we would propose that NORI might be converted into a full-fledged cancer hospital. Enough land is available within the premises of adjacent PIMS, which can be utilised for this noble cause. Similarly, government should support expansion and up gradation of all the 18 cancer diagnostic and treatment centres manned by PAEC in different parts of the country.
