Thousands turned up to pay homage to popular singer-cum- preacher, Naat-khwan and Tableeghi Jamat member Junaid Jamshed who was laid rest amid touching scenes.
Those attending the funeral comprised all shades of opinion and schools of thought.
They sobbed and recited Kalima and verses from Holy Quran as his funeral prayers were offered at the AKG ground in Defence Housing Authority, Thursday.
Noted religious scholar and old colleague Maulana Jamil Tariq led the prayers. Before that he delivered a brief speech on life and deeds of a human being in the context of Islamic teachings.
Some said it was a record crowd, bigger than that of Abdul Sattar Edhi’s or Amjad Sabri, both of whom were celebrities in their own rite.
Junaid was killed in a PIA air crash near Havelian in KPK, and was brought to Karachi the night before.
He was laid to rest at Darul-Uloom graveyard, Korangi as per his will.
Junaid’s wife Nayha who was with him on the flight was buried in Lahore as her remains were collected earlier by her mother and relatives and taken to Lahore from PIMS hospital in Islamabad.
Arrangements for prayers and the funeral had started since morning. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers personnel were stationed at the AKD Ground.
A Bomb Disposal squad also searched the venue to detect any explosives.
Junaid Jamshed had been on a preaching tour to Chitral and was on his way back to Islamabad when the flight crashed at Havelian.
