TDAP’s possible still bigger role

AS the international financial institutions and journals are pouring in
with upbeat remarks about the future economic prospects of the country, it is also time for relevant stakeholders including Trade Development Authority of Pakistan as well as Ministry of Commerce to adopt some holistic approach in order to enhance country’s exports base – something which is vital to achieve self reliance and put economy on strong footing.
Under the CPEC and other regional trade arrangements, the economic activities are expected to pick up momentum in the near future especially with the establishment of special economic zones in the Provinces. Though the government has set the target of enhancing its exports to 35 billion dollars by 2018, the potential and prospects are much higher provided the relevant stakeholders come up with the right kind of interventions and address the challenges that currently are hampering the exports growth. Rice and cotton are the two most important items of Pakistan’s export basket but it is unfortunate that despite being an agricultural country the exports of these two items dwindled by 8.60 percent and 7.1 percent in the last fiscal year. Besides extending incentives and facilities to the growers, it is also imperative to focus on agriculture related research to produce high quality and high yielding seeds. In addition we can also enhance our export basket by adding value addition to our products. Having said so, the role of TDAP, the successor organization of Export Promotion Bureau, is of vital significance in enhancing the exports. Since its inception back in 2006, the Authority has played important role in the exports and under the dynamic leadership of its incumbent CEO S M Muneer – a seasoned professional having vast experience of working in financial institutions – the TDAP can play a much bigger role in multiplying the exports. For this the authority needs to take on board the public and private sector stakeholders and develop such innovative and proactive marketing and promotional efforts that improve the market access and promote the business image of Pakistan the world over.
