To say good bye to the outgoing Ambassador Sun Weidong and his wife Diana Bao, a good number of dignitaries, ministers, parliamentarians from government and opposition, members of the Diplomatic community, UN, civil society and friends turned up Monday afternoon in illuminating halls of the embassy and wished him best of luck for his future endeavors.
During his 1,500 plus days (over 4 years) in Pakistan as Ambassador of China, Ambassador Sun Weidong and his wife Diana Bao visited different parts of the country for example, from Swat to Gilgit, Lahore to Gwadar and came across many people, however Ambassador Sun says his visit to COMSATS back in 2014 was perhaps the most touching point of his diplomatic career.
At the reception Mr and Mrs Sun Weidong hosted for friends and colleagues to say good bye, one could see the outgoing ambassador a bit emotional as he shared with the guests his visit to COMSATS China Research Centre in November, 2014, November 21 to be exact. “I still remember the students of the institute standing up and raising their hands and taking solemn oath that they would devote their lives for promotion of Pak-China friendship, said Ambassador Sun Weidong. “Their voices are still echoing in my ears and I think this is the voice of every Pakistani and Chinese national to further promote and strengthen bond of friendship between the two countries,” said he. Dear friends, said Ambassador Sun Weidong, this is not only time to say good bye to you but also to wish all of you, my Pakistani friends and colleagues from other countries best of luck, he said. The reception was marked by the presence of Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Minister for Postal Services Maulana Ameer Zaman, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sartaj Aziz, Air Chief Sohail Aman, Senators Sherry Rehman, M Talha, CDA Chairman Sh Ansar Aziz, PNCA DG Jamal Shah and many other noted personalities of the town. They termed Ambassador and his wife the most beautiful couple and very caring and kind friends of Pakistan. The Ambassador expressing his gratitude said he was taking along with him sweet memories of the people and cities of Pakistan, the familiar note of Nee Hao while visiting some shopping mall or having a walk in the Margalla Hills expresses Pakistani people’s deep bond of friendship and feeling of love and regard for the Chinese people, he said.
Ambassador Sun Weidong termed his diplomatic days in Pakistan memorable with particular regard to birth and growth of China Pakistan Economic Corridor, the flagship project of Belt & Road Initiative of President Xi’s vision. The project he said was initiated during his time as Chief Diplomat of China in Pakistan and now the project is in early harvest stage. He also termed his days in Pakistan remarkable because of historic visit made by President Xi in 2015. As follow up to that visit of Chinese leadership, bilateral trade, business, development, education and people-to-people social and cultural exchanges have seen many times increase, said Ambassador Sun. He also spoke high of the colleagues and teams of Chinese embassy without whose support it would be difficult to carry out day-to-day business. In the end, he asked the Pakistani government and friends to extend the same cooperation and support to his successor who would be joining them soon. “Let’s materialize President Xi’ vision of Belt & Road Project and work for the common good and shared prosperity of the entire region as well as the world,” Ambassador Sun Weidong concluded his farewell speech.
