Mumbai—Dav Whatmore, who has been removed as Zimbabwe coach will visit his birth country Sri Lanka before heading to his adopted country Australia.
Speaking exclusively over his mobile from Harare, the 63-year-old Whatmore said, “I am still in Zimbabwe but before returning to Australia, soon will leave for Sri Lanka first. I am scheduled to meet my wife (Katheryn) there”.
Whatmore was born in Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka) and was educated at Royal College, Colombo. He and his family migrated to Australia in 1962.Thereafter he lived in Mentone, a suburb of Melbourne, and studied at Mentone Grammar School.
Whatmore seemed to be more upset over the treatment he received just a fortnight ago before the commencement of the series against India.
“The only comment I’d like to make is that I was indeed shocked when told by the MD of ZC. I’ll have more to say at a later date. Please respect my wishes”.
Whatmore’s removal is more because of the poor winning ratio by the Zimbabwe team, it is learnt here.
However, he was very popular among the boys.
I really thought he was a good coach, good communicated”, one of the senior players, said exclusively.
“He is just finalizing things with Zimbabwe cricket and then he will leave. His payments have been sorted out”, the player said.
In the meantime, Lance Klusener was scheduled to join the Zimbabwe team as its batting coach on Tuesday.
