Islamabad—Senate celebrates its 44th foundation day. The upper house held a special session yesterday today to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the protection and restoration of democracy in the country.
The house in a unanimous resolution reiterated that it would play its constitutional role of defending and safeguarding the rights and interests of the federation, federating units and citizens of Pakistan.
The resolution moved by Leader of the Opposition, Aitzaz Ahsan paid tributes to the unsung heroes of democracy, political workers and common people of the country who sacrificed their lives and liberty to uphold the constitution of Pakistan.
The Senate through its resolution paid tributes to the predecessors who worked hard to maintain the dignity and status of the upper house. The resolution appreciated the inclusion of Senators in the Public Accounts Committee.
The Senate resolved to continue its struggle for the enhancement of role and powers to make Pakistan a true federation as envisaged by the constitution.
It resolved to continue undertaking legislation for the welfare of the people and continue its struggle for safeguarding the interests of the country in the wake of emerging regional and global realities.
Those who attended special session among were others Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, former Chairman Senate Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, former Deputy Chairmen Khalilur Rehman, Sabir Ali Baloch, Jan Muhammad Jamali, member of the first Senate of Pakistan Chaudhary Muhammad Aslam and former senators and members of National Assembly.
The Chairman, in his remarks, said that the presence of the Speaker in the house is reflection of the fact that both the houses of the parliament of Pakistan are working together for the welfare of the people and for strengthening the federation and democracy. He said that the parliament will continue its struggle for the betterment of the people of the country and strengthening of the national values.
Initiating the discussion, PML-N senator Mushahidullah Khan said the senate has equal representation of all the units of the federation. He said that due to the struggle of the people of the country, political workers and political parties the democracy has been strengthened in the country.
Leader of the Opposition, Aitzaz Ahsan said that presence of the leadership from both the houses in the session is reflection of the fact that both the houses of the parliament have unanimous views on the issues of the national interests.
He said that both the houses will continue cooperation in future for the welfare of the country.
Deputy Chairman Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri said that all the parliamentarians are united for strengthening democracy and democratic institutions. He said we are working for safeguarding the constitution of the country.
Taking part in the discussion the members said that the people of the country are real stakeholders of Pakistan and the sitting leadership has provided connectivity between the parliament and the masses.
They said the real strength of the Senate is that it has equal representation of all the provinces irrespective of their population. They said that the Senate is the defender and protector of the federation. “Senate should be given financial and other powers equal to the National Assembly”.
