Rawalpindi Police have finalized security and traffic arrangements for Defence and Martyrs Day which will be observed here like other parts of the country on Thursday (Sept 6).
Under the security plan evolved on the directive of City Police Officer Abbas Ahsan, some 2,000 cops would be deployed, a police spkoseman said on Wednesday.
He said the city had been divided into two zones, three sectors and eight sub-sectors with setting up special pickets, motorbike patrolling, special mobile patrolling, elite patrolling and other steps to ensure security on the day. All entry and exit points of the Rawalpindi district had been secured through tight security arrangements while special monitoring at the entry points, he added.
Special Branch personnel along with the staff of Bomb Disposal Squad, Fire Brigade and Rescue-1122 would perform duties to meet any emergency situation, he said, adding every sector would be covered by a Deputy Superintendent of Police while Potohar Division SP would supervise overall security duties.
The City Traffic Police (CTP) has also issued a traffic plan for the Defence Day under which the Mall Road will be closed from 2 pm on Thursday.
According to Chief Traffic Officer Rawalpindi Muhammad Bin Ashraf, a comprehensive traffic plan has been formulated for September 6 to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic.
As many as 24 junior traffic wardens, 396 warden officers, 18 inspectors and incharges along with seven deputy superintendents of police would be tasked with special duties to regulate traffic on alternate routes and ensure smooth flow of traffic on various city roads, the CTP added.
He said he would personally monitor traffic arrangements. The Mall Road, T&T Chowk to Shalimar Chowk, Kashmir Road, T&T Chowk to Chungi 22, Tameezuddin Road, PC Hotel turn to CSD, Tufail Road and GHQ gate number 3 to Chungi 22, Iftikhar Janjua Road, University Chowk near EME Mess to GHQ and Masood Akhtar Kiani Road would remain closed for traffic from 2 pm until the conclusion of the function at GHQ.
He said traffic moving from Sadar to Shalimar Chowk to Peshawar Road would be diverted to Bank Road and reach Mall Road via MH Chowk. Traffic from MH Chowk to Katchery would be diverted towards Railway Road, Kamran Market, Mareer Chowk to reach Katchery Chowk. No traffic would be allowed towards Transit Camp and Roomi Road and from Military Accounts Office to Railway Road during the ceremony, he added.—APP
