National Women Squash Championship
Peshawar—Pakistan No. 1 Samar Anjum of Pakistan Wapda, Faiza Zafar of Sindh, Muqqadas Ashraf of Wapda, Amina Fayyaz of Punjab, Komal Khan of Wapda, Riffat Khan of Wapda, Amina Latif of Punjab and Saima Shoukat of Wapda took berth into the quarter-finals after securing opening day victories against their respective rivals in the 7th ICMS National Senior Ranking Women Squash Championship being played here at Jansher Khan Squash Complex on Friday.
Former World Champion Qamar Zaman was also present and witnessed the matches. In the first match Pakistan No. 1 and top seed of the Championship Samar Anjum of Pakistan Wapda defeated Laiba Ijaz of Wapda in a thrilling match. The match lasted for 36 minutes and Samar Anjum mostly dominated proceedings but Laiba Ijaz gave her tough resistance, specially in the second sets. The score was 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6. She also appreciated her junior rival Laiba Ijaz and expressed the hope if she continues her practice she would be reaching in the top ranking at national level.
In the second match promising inform Faiza Zafar of Sindh had already upset Zoya Khalid in straight sets. Faiza has the ability to make more upset in the Championship, former World Champion Qamar Zaman remarked about her after witnessing her match against Zoya Khalid.
Top ranking player Muqqadas Ashraf, who is currently imparting squash training in Iran, defeated Habiba of Sindh by 3-0, the score was 11-8, 11-2 and 11-8. The most promising and current junior no. 1 ranking Amina Fayyaz of Punjab upset top seeded player Roshna Mehboob of Punjab in a marathon four sets battle, the score was 11-5, 5-11, 12-10 and 12-10.
Amina Fayyaz come up among top ranking players in a very short-span of time and before losing the first set came back strongly by winning three consecutive sets after a tough battle as both were stretched to 12-10 and 12-10 in the third and fourth sets.
In the other quarter-finals Komal of Wapda beat Kainat of KP by 11-7, 11-3 and 11-3, top seeded Rifat Khan of Wapda defeated Noor Ul Amin of Punjab in straight sets, the score was 11-9, 11-6 and 11-9, Amina Latif of Punjab beat Aiman Shahbaz of Punjab by 11-4, 11-5 and 11-6 and Saima Soukat of Wapda, a former Pakistan No. 1 beat Noorena Shams of KP by 11-1, 11-3 and 11-3.—APP
