Rs24.622m allocated for monuments’ conservation

Multan—The Punjab government has allocated Rs 24.622 million for completion of five on-going schemes of conservation of monuments in Multan, Khanewal, Vehari and Sahiwal in the provincial budget 2016-17.
Officials told APP that a sum of Rs 14.462 mil-lion was allocated for the fiscal year 2016-17 under an on-going Rs 118 million project of development and conservation of Archaeological sites at Harappa, Sahiwal.
Out of the Rs 14.462 million, Rs 9 million were allocated for conservation work and remaining for staff salary and necessary equipment, Incharge Archaeology department Multan Malik Ghulam Muhammad said.
Out of the total Rs 118 million, Rs 85 million were being utilized by the Buildings department for infrastructure development at the historical site, as old as 5000 BC, under which the boundary wall with metallic fences was near completion while floor construction has been completed.
A sum of Rs 1.4 million was allocated for 350-400 years old Sawi Masjid in Multan. It was a Rs 3.2 million scheme that remained under execution last year but faced delay due to the lethargy of the contractor that prompted the department to engage a new contractor.—APP
