Replacement of university heads

THE Lahore High Court ruling to remove the four acting Vice Chairpersons of the Punjab University, Lahore College for Women University, University of Sargodha and Nawaz University of Engineering and Technology Lahore brought to fore some problems being faced by these premier institutions and their stipulated solutions. Mujahid Kamran, the acting Vice Chairman of the Punjab University is currently in his third tenure after two highly successful earlier innings, as the head to bring about remarkable changes in the institution to make it among the top two best in Pakistan by HEC.
The acting VC’s of all four have been accused of making questionable appointments, among other issues. As a stop-gap measure, the senior most teachers within the institutions will take ‘up the position and suitable candidates are found in general for the staff of institutions according to the court decision with widespread impact among the concerned institutions.
However, the Academic Staff Associations, the elected representatives of university teachers, have expressed their concerns over the decision along with heads of various departments from New Campus Old Campus, Gujranwala Campus, and Jhelum Campus respectively.
It was pointed out that Mujahid Kamran, obtained two last tenures on merit. He was the first Vice- Chancellor who was appointed through a high-powered Vice Chancellor’s Search Committee in January 2008 on merit. And again for the third time the overall marks obtained by the Vice- Chancellor put him on No.1, The matter of naming another acting Vice Chancellor, against the current acting person and some other related aspects would certainly require some further legal cum administrative clarifications at a higher level on this important issue.
