Remembering Amanullah, a friend and exceptional colleague

Khalid Butt

A sudden call from an ex-PIA colleague Ch. Bashir on Sunday took me with utter surprise of completely unexpected passing away of another current colleague Amanullah of sudden passing away in Karachi. I had spoken to Aman, only a day earlier, without any hint of his being afflicted with some serious ailment.
It took me some time to recover from this, shocking news and my mind started reflecting on the life and rise of Amanullah, whom I had met during my days with Pakistan Times at Karachi, and inducted him as a colleague as I helped him to complete his Masters in Journalism from Karachi University. For some technical reasons, University was reluctant to admit him. But my visit and a meeting with the then Vice-Chancellor, Ehsan Rashid, solved the problem. Before I returned to PIA few years later I had made sure to groom young Aman, to graduate into a proper and trained journalist.
His subsequent career took him to work for some leading newspapers after the Pakistan Times, like Business Recorder, besides editing a national weekly “Economist”, to make his mark as a leading light with Pakistan Observer at Karachi. For last few years he had been playing a stellar role in Pakistan Observer at Karachi. His sudden and unexpected passing away makes me infinitely sad. My deepest condolence to his family both on my own and behalf of all colleagues in the Pakistan Observer, for which he had played a prominent role during his career. May God bless him and give patience to his family for the irreparable loss.
