Re-verification drive on right course

DECLARING it as an important milestone pertaining to national security, the drive of re-verification of CNICs was launched by Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan on 1st July and only two months into it, the results produced by the campaign are very encouraging as about 67.9 million CNICs have been verified and 48000 aliens identified. According to reports, 1685 aliens including 1549 Afghans, 44 Bangladeshis, one Indian and one Indonesian have also voluntarily returned the Pakistani CNICs.
Indeed, the re-verification is a mammoth task entrusted to NADRA but given the commitment of the Interior Minister, we have no doubt in mind that the drive will be made a success story given its importance for the security and the threat posed by illegal immigrants particularly Indians and Afghans. Chairing a meeting on Wednesday, Ch Nisar directed the NADRA officials that there should be no slackness in the reverification drive. We are sure that the Interior Minister — known for his bold and tough stance especially on matters pertaining to national security — will spare no effort not only to bring to book the holders of fake Pakistani Identity Cards but also those black sheep in the database authority who connived with the illegal immigrants to get the CNICs. These black sheep are bringing a bad repute to this important national organization and ridding the NADRA of these officials have become need of the hour so that in future no illegal immigrant could pocket the National Identity Card. In addition, NADRA also needs to remove loopholes if any in its existing automated system in order to make the database trustworthy, dependable and fully secured. Though there are no confirmed figures on the number of aliens, yet there is no doubt that most of these especially those belonging to India and Afghanistan are involved in criminal and sabotage activities. Purging the country of these elements has become all the more imperative to ensure security of our own people as well as mega projects. We expect the re-verification campaign will be further expedited in the days to come and at the same time we expect the people will also realise their responsibilities and make this drive a success through their active participation.
