Provincial Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment at Workplace Farkhanda Wasim Afzal on Tuesday awarded major penalty of demotion to an official of the Punjab Employees Social Security Institution (PESSI) for harassing a female subordinate.
The applicant, class-IV employee, through her complaint, had alleged that the director medical harassed her at workplace with his immoral and sexual communications.
The provincial ombudsperson, after hearing detailed arguments of the parties and recording statements of the witnesses, declared the accused guilty of harassment, sexually demeaning attitude and using remarks/ communications of a sexual nature towards the complainant. The ombudsperson awarded the major penalty of reduction to a lower post to the accused.
The ombudsperson observed that it was the basic right of working women to be able to work in a harassment-free environment.
In addition to redressing the grievances of female employees, such cases would also serve as a message to the male officers/ officials to refrain from harassing their female colleagues, she added.—APP
