PTI’s positive decision

CORE Committee of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), on Monday, decided that Imran Khan would ‘voluntarily’ appear before the Election Commission of Pakistan on October 26, the next date of hearing of the case relating to contempt of the court. PTI leader, despite repeated summons and reminders, did not appear before the Commission to clarify his position and the ECP had issued non-bailable arrest warrants of Imran Khan for 26th.
The decision of PTI and its chief to appear before the Commission augurs well as non-appearance before a constitutional body was conveying highly negative impression and message. It is quite obvious that ECP has no personal grudge or grievance against Imran Khan but respect and prestige of the institution has to be upheld at all costs. Unfortunately, the Commission remained target of undue criticism by different leaders especially Imran Khan on the issue of its neutrality and working despite the fact that it has been delivering efficiently despite severe limitations and constraints. Khan targeted even the CEC which was appointed with his full consent and who thought it appropriate to resign to save his person from politically-motivated attacks. PTI has also been lashing at the ECP on the issue of holding of general election in which the party was defeated, a trend mostly upheld in subsequent bye-elections during the last four years. While welcoming the decision of PTI, we would urge the party not to make the Commission focus of its propaganda and give due respect to the institution. Neither democracy nor stability is possible without allowing all institutions to function independently and without any fear or pressure.
