Record highest generation, 17720 MW reached
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) workers Wednesday forced the WAPDA authorities to announce reduced hours of load shedding especially during the holy month of Ramzan.
Charged PTI workers led by the PTI MNA from South Waziristan, Ayesha Gulalai Wazir, and local district leadership, stormed the WAPDA House in Peshawar during their protest against power cuts. They also set up sit-in camp outside the PESCO office.
“The federal government receives taxes from the citizens but does not provide basic facilities in return,” Gulalai said, as party workers chanted slogans against the federal government.
She further alleged that PESCO was run as per the directives of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Amir Muqam and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl president Maulana Fazlur Rehman. “The protest shall continue till unannounced load-shedding ends,” Gulalai said..
Later on, the PESCO management also held talks with Gulalai and assured her that no load-shedding would be carried out during Ramazan. She also announced ending the protest. They however, ended their sit-in against electricity load-shedding and overbilling in the province after written assurance from PESCO officials to end the load-shedding particularly in the month of Ramazan
The PESCO authorities on the hand said they were not carrying out unannounced load shedding. “The province has not been subjected to any unscheduled or unannounced load shedding,” a PESCO spokesperson said. “Seventy percent of the protestors belong to high-loss areas.”
He further stated that 18-hours of load-shedding is only effective in areas that have 70 to 100 percent electricity loss, and said that if these areas agree to the installation of billing meters, load-shedding hours can be reduced in this area.
Meanwhile, the country’s electricity generation, Wednesday, touched new record high at 17720MW. Last year highest generation recorded was 17430MW on 19th June during holy month of Ramzan. In the record generation the hydel component contributed 5240MW, GENCOs 2901 MW while IPPS produced 9579MW. The successful transmission and distribution of 17720MW has also reinforced the government’s investment in the power sector.
While congratulating the nation and also team at the Ministry of Water and Power, Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif reiterated the government resolve to take every step towards resolving issues pertaining to electricity.
He said that addition of new generation will further help in bridging the gap between demand and supply.
