Prisoners in jails to be tested against hepatitis and aids

Rawalpindi—Jail authorities across Punjab have been directed to arrange laboratory tests of prisoners after fears spread about hepatitis and aids among the prisoners. According to reports, the prisoners are being held in unhygienic conditions and their food is also not according to the laid down standard. In some cases, the jail staff, keep prisoners of minor crimes with those using narcotics and that is creating health problems. In Adiyala Jail there are more prisoners than the capacity leading to unhygienic conditions and spread of diseases.
Punjab Health department has constituted a 12-member doctors team for check up and laboratory tests of prisoners in Adiyala Jail. Dr Shehryar will be the Coordinator of Special Health Programme for prisoners. Sources said that a specific schedule has been drawn up and laboratory tests of the prisoners would also be carried out other than these two diseases if found feeling problems during the medical checkup. According to prisoners, those having no source or money, are denied of necessary treatment.
