President Mamnoon’s enlightened address

IN his address to nation on the occasion of national flag hoisting ceremony held at Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad on Independence Day, President Mamnoon Hussain touched important issues. He emphasised that a strong, developed and democratic Pakistan is destiny of the nation. Referring to recently held general election, he said this also envisages a message that power of taking decisions in the country rests with the people who also achieved this country through a democratic struggle.
There is no denying the fact that Pakistan came into being through a democratic struggle under the dynamic leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and it can only prosper by strictly following this course. The elections have paved the way for another democratic transition and there are expectations that the newly elected governments would deliver as per aspirations of the people. As for transparency of the election, the President pointed out that there was overall consensus on the fairness of exercise and was result of long-drawn process of reforms initiated for strengthening electoral procedures and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). However, he said that still if there are complaints then it is for the ECP to take stock of the situation and satisfy aggrieved parties.
We would suggest that all parties in Parliament should join hands, form another parliamentary committee that should go deep into different election-related issues and come out with a comprehensive report for further reforms, if needed. The ultimate objective should be to make the elections credible so that those coming to power through election have all the legitimacy that is required to further stabilise democracy in the country. Unfortunately, we have so far not yet focused on strengthening the institutions and it is time we listen to the advice of the President to take concrete measures for the purpose. Domains and jurisdictions of different state institutions are clearly defined in the Constitution and clearer lines can be drawn in case of any doubt for strengthening national harmony and solidarity.
