Karachi—The role of Karachi Electric (KE) as sole power distribution company for Karachi and its periphery has widely been criticized and condemned by the civil society, human rights activists and religious and political parties alike for failing to upgrade the system and ensure enough power generation to meet the city’s need since the day when the company was privatised and the UAE-based group of investors became new owners of the company.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Coordination Committee (CC), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Karachi Division and now the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf (PTI), Jamaat-e Islami (JI) Karachi chapter and now Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Karachi chapter have joined the parties and the civil society on protest against the KE.
A couple of days ago, PPP, JI, PTI and PMLN gave a press conference in protest of blackouts by the KE and a day later, the PPP Chairman Bilawal voiced against the KE. The MQM’s CC had issued a press statement that warned the KE to stop tormenting the consumers of electricity in Karachi.
Sindh Chief Minister’s advisor on information and archives Moula Bux Chandio also could not resist him from showing his severe reaction against the blackouts by the KE and other power DISCOs in Sindh’s rural areas.
Chandio alleged the federal government for prolonged and unscheduled blackouts in Karachi and across the province. This situation of blackouts in Karachi and other parts of the province as inhuman behavior by Federal Government amid hide peeling scorching heat and threats of extreme high temperature especially the heat wave, he said in reaction. The people of Sindh are victim of discrimination from the federal government.
The Federal State Minister for power Abid Sher Ali is behaving as advisor to Mogul emperor. The people of Sindh are facing wrath of SEPCO, HESCO and KE. Federal Government is creating law and order problem through prolonged outages of electricity in Sindh. In addition, the power DISCOs are minting huge sums of money from the electricity consumers by sending highly inflated bills. Judicious distribution of electricity is the right of people of Sindh which is denied.
He warned the federal government of severe repercussions of the ongoing atrocities by the power DISCOs and said the federal government should be ready to see the “Dama Dam Mast Qalandar” situation for failing to resolve the problem.
