Islamabad—Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is to give a policy statement on the issue of Panama Papers leaks in the National Assembly on Monday (today). PTV to broadcast live.
He is expected to announce steps that would ensure a transparent probe into the Panama Papers issue and offshore companies.
The Prime Minister has already presented himself and his family for accountability and announced the formation of a Judicial Commission on the demand of the Opposition.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) had also acknowledged that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has no offshore company and his name was mistakenly included in the Panama Papers.
Many key leaders in the country are included in the Panama Papers.
According to sources, a decision for an indiscriminate accountability of politicians will be made.
The accountability process will be conducted in two phases told the sources.
In the first phase, new Terms of Reference (ToRs) will be decided upon and an investigation into the Panama Papers leaks will be conducted.
While in the second phase, an accountability commission will be formed on permanent basis which will conduct against corrupt politicians.
Decisions of the accountability commission will be implemented on immediate basis.
The government has completed discussions on the matter with its legal team. Those accused will not be able to become part of Parliament in future, told the sources.
The prime minister will respond to Opposition’s queries on Panama Papers for the first time following the P-leaks the Opposition including PTI has decided not to create a ruckus during the PM’s address.
The Opposition parties will let the PM speak freely from the assembly floor.
They, however, warned that they will continue to protest if the prime minister failed to answer their questions.
PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that they are looking forward prime minister’s address, however, they will raise questions.
Sources said that Pakistan Tehreek e-Insaf will demand PM’s resignation till investigation Panama Papers last.
The sources also said that the party has also prepared five suggestions for the commission. The joint Opposition has also prepared seven questions for the PM to answer during the session. PTI Chairman Imran Khan will attend the parliament session and is likely to speak after the Opposition leader Khurshid Shah
According to sources Imran Khan will present record of his British offshore company in parliament, while he will also try to explain the difference between his offshore company and the Panama Papers.
The Opposition parties and the government will have separate consultative meetings with their party members.
According to sources the prime minter will chair a high-level meeting with the cabinet members and important MNAs before his address in the National Assembly.
